In 1849 La Maddalena experienced another important historical period. Giuseppe Garibaldi, in fact, arrives in exile for a short time, welcomed by the family of his friend Antonio Susini. He then returned there in 1855 deciding to stop in Caprera where he built his house.

Here he created a small but self-sufficient company to support a small community and managed to transform the island by planting vineyards, olive groves, orchards and citrus groves (still present today), raising livestock and even becoming a beekeeper.

In this atmosphere he lived for 26 years, until his death (June 2, 1882).

The Garibaldi Compendium is today made up of a set of buildings and areas, once owned by the Genarale family, sold to the State and made usable since 1978, after a series of restoration interventions.

All the buildings in which the Hero spent the last years of his life overlook the courtyard where the pine planted by Garibaldi for the birth of his daughter Clelia stands.

In a secluded site are the family tombs: despite its desire to be cremated, a rough granite boulder today preserves the embalmed body of Garibaldi.
